CHALLENGE

After developing PaddleSoft, a core set of web-based tools, for their local paddling club, PaddleCore realized that others like them were struggling with similar challenges – a dispersed community and no centralized source for information or resources for dragon-boating events and activities. Although they had been successfully using their basic software in-house for years, they knew that great UX and an enticing brand would be critical to grow and engage the dragon-boating community across North America.

APPROACH

As a start-up on a tight timeline, PaddleCore needed a flexible design process. Drawing on their experience in developing their existing tool-set, and their deep direct knowledge of target users and needs, Usability Matters went into extreme collaboration mode, working closely with the small nimble company to guide them through examining key user groups and tasks and developing a system to connect paddlers, teams, and events. We developed a rich and distinctive identity system based on the idea of a pulse – Gushou: the drum-beat that is at the heart of dragon-boating.

By learning their business quickly and adapting to the their particular challenges, Usability Matters was able to help the PaddleCore team focus their strategic direction and prioritize their targets, and to create a new identity for this vibrant growing community.
